Post Card of Essex Competition

9th March 2011

Initially announced on the forum as the 'Photographic Treasure Hunt' this is a competition for which you will have a year to take the photos.

At the club meeting on 10th March 2010, 8 locations in Essex were chosen.

  1. Ulting (including church)
  2. Bradwell (including St Peter's chapel)
  3. Hadleigh castle
  4. Battlesbridge
  5. Hylands Park (including house)
  6. Compass Gardens, South Woodham Ferrers
  7. Old Leigh
  8. East Hanningfield

These locations are within a 20 mile radius of South Woodham Ferrers.

An entry into the competition will consist of a photo taken at all 8 locations (1 from each location, no more, no less). The photos should be printed approximately post card size so that the 8 prints will fit onto a single 40cm x 50cm board (16" x 20").

The subject of each photo should be suitable for use as a postcard of that location. i.e. you need to have been to the specified location in order to have taken the photo.

The photos can be taken at any time during the year. The idea of the competition is to get out and take photos, not to use existing photos. Use of old photos cannot be prevented but please enter into the spirit of the competition.

It is intended that the competition will be judged by the members. Geoff Partridge, who dreamt up this competition and the rules, will be donating a prize for the winner.

An entry will be judged as a set of prints. Each print should have a visible title to identify the location. The members name must not be shown.

The competition evening will start with members viewing the entries and voting on them. There will then be a discussion on the entries while the scores are added up. All entries to remain annonymous until the winner is announced, in case there is a tie. Alternatively we may have an early tea break before the discussion to allow the result to be announced first.

Method of scoring - Each entry will be allocated a number (not membership number although this must be on the back of the entry). Each member will be given a scorecard. They will enter their membership number on the card to prevent them voting for themselves. They will then enter their personal choice of 1st, 2nd and 3rd on the scorecard. Their 1st choice will receive 10 points, 2nd choice 7 points and 3rd choice 3 points. The winner will be the entry that scores the most points. Should there be a tie for the winner there will be a knockout vote on the tied entries only.

To track progress there will be a page in the club folder (available club nights) to tick off the locations you have visited. I suggest you also use the forum if some of you want to get together to visit one of the locations.

Some locations have already been nominated in the 'Photographic Treasure Hunt' topic on the forum. You have until 9th March 2010 to add to the list or email them to Geoff. It must not cost anything to visit the suggested location, apart from travel costs. Details of how to get there will be required, if the location is picked.

This competition may not suit all tastes but I hope it will encourage you to visit some of our local attractions.
